SPRING into Target = Cute Stuff!
Liberty of London is the latest collection for Target. Debuting March 14th, it looks to include everything from bikes to home items and much more.
What’s so fabulous about this collection is the patterned prints it uses. For fun you can even go to their facebook page and it will choose a pattern for your personality!
I’m excited to see the whole collection…and yet I’m not. Crap, I’m going to have to buy something.
Spare Bathroom Mid-Redo
The old white tile in my spare bath is just laughing at me. That whole room is just begging to be ripped apart. Want new bathtub, want new tile surround & floor, want new vanity/sink/faucet…
I spent some time this past weekend stripping the wallpaper and was sooooo close to completely gutting it. I practiced some major restraint because I would just get too financially over my head. I know I’ll renovate it but it may be a few years until I do. So for right now it’s cheap & cosmetic.
I noticed that my toilet tank has a small crack in it and it’s been slowly leaking onto the floor, drip by drip. I could just replace the tank but (you know me) I’ll be replacing the whole thing. I’ve been pricing toilets and they start around $100 which isn’t bad. I just need to make sure that the subfloor isn’t rotted when I take up the old toilet. And when I do my permanent redo I’ll save the toilet.
So wallpaper’s out. So is the sliding glass door. The bottom track is cemented to the tub so I can’t get that out but the shower curtain will cover it up anyway. Keeping the vanity/sink but will paint the vanity and replace the light fixture, faucet & mirror. My sister has a spare medicine cabinet she’s donating to my cause (score!) and I already have a faucet donated from a friend’s own bathroom renovation (double score!!). Check out that remodeling process.
This week continuing to clean walls & prep for painting…
Bedroom Bay Window
What I really like about my bedroom is (1) the vaulted ceiling, seems to make it more spacious than it is and (2) the big bay window that lets in alot of light.
So, how am I going to dress this window? 3 separate curtains? Blinds or no blinds? I think I’ve got a plan…
I can’t take credit for this alleged plan. If I didn’t know better I’d probably leave the current blinds there and not do anything. You know I have a designer block when it comes to bedrooms…
Fortunately, I was listening to Nate Berkus (super cute designer, does alot of Oprah shows) on my XM radio and he had a woman calling in with the same dilemma.
He said that, definitely, the 3 windows need to be addressed individually with a blind/shade treatment as well as the whole area with a drapery treatment. This layering will add depth and interest to the space.
So, my plan is to have inexpensive bamboo roman shades mounted on the inside of the windows and curtain panels mounted on the wall outside the bay area. I had an extra long curtain rod from Restoration Hardware that I wasn’t using and I’ve already found some super cheap bamboo blinds from JC Penney…score! They were on sale and made to order. I should get them in about 5 weeks.
Notice that I’ve hung the rod as close to the ceiling as I could to add height to the room.
The last thing I’ll decide on will be curtain panels. This may be difficult since I’ve already got the bedding I want. I’ll need to find something that won’t interfere with the pattern of the bedding.
Baby steps, Jodi…baby steps.
I Had to Have This Stupid Soap Dispenser
I really do get excited about the dumbest things.
A couple seasons ago Target came out with a clear green soap dispenser that was totally cute but wouldn’t go with anything in my bathroom. I even considered redoing my whole bathroom because I liked this dispenser. I was bored, what can I say?
Well, today I was wandering around the store and low and behold they are carrying the exact same dispenser but now it comes in aqua glass as well as white milk glass. Yes, I snatched the blue glass one up for $12.99!
I couldn’t find them on the target website so maybe they’re only found in the stores or else that’s how new they are…not sure why.
Now that I have my lovely little soap pump I’ll try not to make the same mistake that I’ve made before and put colored soap in it. That really sucked.
(Kitchen) Island Delight
I’ve been shopping around for a kitchen island that will fit my space. Something that I can fit stools around and that’s on casters to pull out into the middle of my kitchen when needed.
So far haven’t found many but I came across this beautiful and (relatively) inexpensive one on Target’s website.
What a wonderful centerpiece that would make. And at 42″x24″ it looks like it could fit well into most small kitchens. It also comes in black.
Too bad I’m looking specifically for a round island.
I found this one which I like on thehomedecor.net website.
I Love Lamp!
Yes, that’s an “Anchorman” reference.
But I do, yes I do! I found an awesome lamp at HomeGoods for only $25!! I was with my sister when we saw it and I called dibs so it’s mine, Mine!
This wire lamp has a cool antique patina and a cream-colored linen shade. I think I like the shade as much as the lamp.
I’ll probably move this to my bedroom on a side table but my bedroom (right now) is not very photogenic…really, it sucks.
I try and check out HomeGoods every few weeks because they’re always getting great new things in.
And the burlap curtains that I wrote about before have been ordered (yay!) and hopefully I’ll get them in a couple weeks to post for you.
Burlap Window Treatment
I saw these burlap curtains from Ballard Designs and I’m really liking them. I’ve always like the texture of burlap, it’s a little more rustic than linen (and cheaper too!). I thought I would hang these in my dining room and living room windows since it’s all one space. I always hang my drapery rods as close to the ceiling as possible to add height to my rooms.
These curtains I found for $50 per panel. They’re lined and have an added corded fringe which I kinda like. But I also found some on ebay that are custom-made for $30 per panel. These I could have lined and add a ruffle on the edge as well. I’m not sure which ones will end up being cheaper after shipping and everything.
My drapery rods that I’ve decided on needed to have a zero clearance. In other words my living room window is right next to my fireplace and there’s no room for any decorative finials on the rods. I have considered a “return” drapery rod which just curves on either end to attach to the wall but they were too plain.
Pottery Barn’s standard rods are exactly what I had in mind. Just decorative enough and I really like the “warm brass” finish. I used to be all about “satin nickel” finishes but for whatever reason I find myself (more & more) drawn to the coppers and antique brass finishes. But I find that my tastes are always changing and in 5 years I’ll probably return to the silver-type finishes.
I’m thinking that these two window treatment could cost me around $400 which is pretty steep for me. I could find a local seamstress to possible make my curtains for me. I think that’s what this is going to be is a process to see how cheap I can get everything.
I’ll keep you up to date on my frugal progress.
Chandelier-i-ous!
I’ve been looking at chandeliers for my dining area. It’s not a room by itself but is open to my living area so I want something that’s not too big and bulky for the space.
Guest Bathroom Project
My last room to strip wallpaper in. Thank goodness. And yet, I’m considering putting up wallpaper in my guest bath if you can believe it. I’ve already stripped wallpaper in my kitchen, powder room and master bath. I’ve never been so glad that I invested the 50 bucks in a steamer.
My upstairs guest bathroom is a little like a time machine, it just screams 80’s. The iris wallpaper & shiny brass fixtures have just got to go. I want that room to be a relaxing little jewel for my guests to enjoy.
Ultimately, I’d like to redo everything in there. Even more so than my master bath. The beige tub is plastic, the white tile floor is dingy and has a big crack down the middle (which makes me wonder about the subfloor), I don’t like the sliding glass shower doors and the vanity is a simple beige one-piece blah-fest.
But, until I’ve got the funds for a remodel I will be (1)stripping that awful wallpaper, (2)finding a fun paint color and maybe doing a stripe treatment using two different sheens, (3)Luxing it up with some beautiful towels and fixtures that I can reuse when it’s time to renovate.
I’ll keep you posted. And by the way:
HAPPY NEW YEAR~
Pretty Pitchers
I like lots of color and most of my kitchen items don’t necessarily match (right, Nicole?). Bauer Pottery has a load of dining & serving ware items that would suit just about anyone. Who wouldn’t love one of their colorful little pitchers?
They’re a little pricey (the pitcher’s $26.50) but any of their pieces would be a lovely little splash of color in your home.
I think one of my favorites is the cake plate and the various sized spice jars which you could use for just about anything.
